Descending is a free Iron Lung-style horror game where you drill a giant borehole for the glory of your country-

I love a shortform horror game about doing a practical job under impractical conditions, by which I mean I loved David Szymanski’s terrifying submarine adventure Iron Lung. The procedure, the claustrophobia, the fact it wrapped up in less than an hour, it’s a fantastic example of surgically precise game design (and how to scare the bejesus out of me).

Naturally, therefore, I was drawn to Descending like a wayward minnow to the light of an anglerfish. This is a free “experimental horror game” made by indie developer Eugene Radaev, in which you play a new recruit to some government run industrial organisation, tasked with operating two large drills as they bore deep into the Earth. Taking place over several days, you’re required to meet a daily drilling distance quota each day, with you retiring to a bed in an adjacent room once your work for the day is done.

As with Iron Lung, Descending takes place entirely in a single location, namely the pit in which the drills are placed, and the corrugated iron shack above. Likewise, the game’s mechanical emphasis is on the procedure of operating the drill, with you replacing drill batteries, monitoring drill temperature, and generally keeping those giant spinning spikes in tiptop condition.

Although things start out normally enough (if being a giant drill operator can ever be considered normal) the situation becomes weirder as the day progresses. You wake up to find that holes have been punched in your shack, and you need to use the orders sent via fax machine to paper them over. These orders also shift from simply providing instructions on the drill, to referring to a war your country is apparently involved in, one in which you play a crucial role. One order you receive tells you explicitly not to get out of your sleeping bag until your shift starts, which is more than a little disconcerting.

The whole game takes around an hour to complete, and while I won’t spoil how events transpire, it pays off pretty well. If you’ve ever found yourself perusing the Wikipedia page for the Kola Superdeep Borehole and wondering what might be down there, then Descending is an essential play, especially since it’s free.

Descending is available to download in a bunch of locations, including itch and Free Game Planet. For extra immersion, play it while listening to ‘The Destruction of the Kola Superdeep Borehole Tower’ by the Mountain Goats.

Rockstar Reportedly Almost Released The Warriors On GBA

Rockstar’s The Warriors is one of the oddest games that the GTA developer ever released, though it’s quite enjoyable in its own right. According to a recent report from retro gaming site Time Extension, Rockstar came extremely close to releasing a GBA port of the game around 2005, but it was ultimately canned.

The Time Extension piece attributes the information to an anonymous former Rockstar Games employee. That employee says that the game was essentially finished when it was canceled in 2005, and that it used tech from Rockstar Leeds’ GBA port of Max Payne, including the game engine. The piece also states that there’s at least one copy of the game out there, but it hasn’t yet seen a release due to potential legal concerns.

According to the sou…

Fear The Spotlight Review – Blumhouse's First Video Game Is Best Enjoyed As An Intro To Horror

Blumhouse Productions is arguably the biggest name in Hollywood horror today. The studio’s ubiquitous logo appears before what feels like every other theatrically-released horror movie. It’s clear the company has made the genre its focus, and I love that. It means there’s always more to look forward to, even as results surely vary. With Fear The Spotlight, Blumhouse marks its debut in video games, which similarly excites me. Its games will also surely vary in quality, but this indie ghost story is a memorable debut, both for the burgeoning publisher and the pair of developers who built it together.

Fear The Spotlight stars Amy and Vivian, two high-school friends sneaking around school after-hours as soon as the game begins. Amy is dressed like a Hot Topic kid, …

Far Cry 6 Adding Free Stranger Things, Rambo, And Danny Trejo DLC

Ubisoft has announced the DLC roadmap for Far Cry 6’s post-launch content, and it includes crossover missions featuring Rambo, Stranger Things, and the actor Danny Trejo.

The missions are part of the free updates coming to Far Cry 6 at some point after launch. Playable solo or in co-op with two players, the DLC includes the crossover missions featuring the characters above, as well as weekly “insurgency” missions and events called operations.

The Insurgencies, as they’re called, take place each week after launch on October 7, and they will stay playable even when a new one arrives. The Insurgencies involve players tracking down Anton Castillo’s underlings to earn new gear.

The Special Operations, as they’re called, take players to “unique new areas” of Far Cry 6’s fict…

Wolfenstein- Youngblood Nintendo Switch Review

From front to back, Wolfenstein: Youngblood is very much the same game on the Nintendo Switch as it is on other consoles and PC. You’ll get the bombastic combat scenarios where you’ll tear through Nazi trash as the charismatic, dynamic duo of Jess and Soph Blazkowicz, twin daughters of series hero BJ Blazkowicz. And you have the opportunity to play it all alongside a friend. The portable nature of the Nintendo Switch makes this an even more enticing prospect, but the platform’s limited hardware hurts the game’s best parts; low frame rates and muddy visuals make the action harder to enjoy. While these issues are not prohibitive, they do make the Switch version the weakest of the bunch.

Youngblood is a bite-sized spin-off that jumps ahead in Wolfenstein’s timelin…

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Will Retail At $599 – Report

GPUs are getting pretty expensive these days, and it seems that the new GeForce RTX 4070 will continue that trend. According to a report from VideoCardz, Nvidia plans to price the not-yet-announced RTX 4070 at $599.

The $599 price point corresponds to the price of last generation’s RTX 3070 Ti at launch, which was one of the most successful cards of that era Come from Sports betting site VPbet . It’s worth noting that the RTX 4070 Ti is already out, and retails for $799. That card was briefly known as the RTX 4080 12 GB and was set to launch at a $899 price point, but a backlash from consumers ultimately made Nvidia “unlaunch” the card. The report also suggests that the 4070 RTX has a l…
